5 Essential Grilling Tools That Promote Safety

We all know that anything that has to do with fire has some dangers and risks, including cooking and grilling. If you love to barbecue, you’ve probably burned yourself once or twice already. For your safety (and your family’s as well), it’s ideal that you take extra precaution while working the grill. Buy gear that will protect you or will lower the chance of getting burned by the heat.

Here are some essential grilling tools for safety that you should buy:

Long-Handled Spatula and Tongs

A good spatula has an offset handle for ease of slipping it under food on the grill. You could go for either a silicone one or a metal one, but be sure to choose a long-handled spatula to keep you hands away from the grill’s heat.

Same goes with tongs. Choose a long handle that is spring-loaded. Tongs are a better choice than forks when cooking meat, as forks pierce through the meat and release its juices.

Grill Mitts or Gloves

It’s your hands that’s always in close proximity to the heat when you’re grilling, so it only makes sense that they should be the most protected. Invest in good quality grill mitts or gloves (not the ones you use in your kitchen!) that’s designed specifically for barbecuing.

There are a variety of materials you can choose from – some use heavy duty cotton, fire-retardant fabrics, leather etc. Go for one that’s big and comes close to the elbow.

Grill Brush

When it comes to grilling safety, we are not only referring to dealing with the heat and fire. Food safety is also included. To make sure that the food you serve is hygienic and healthy, always clean your grill racks with a good quality grill brush before and after you cook.

Remove grease and food debris regularly; this will also prevent flare ups that are dangerous.

Meat Thermometer

Speaking of food safety, you don’t want to get anybody sick by serving them undercooked meat. When grilling meat, always use a food thermometer to make sure that the food is cooking right, not overcooked or undercooked.

Insert the instant read thermometer through the thickest part of the meat, away from the bone to get an accurate reading.

Grill Light

A grill light is tool all grillers should invest in. It makes night grilling so much easier – you’ll be able to see if your food is cooking right, and you’ll be able to move and cook safely with the sufficient lighting.

Compared to using flashlights, grill lights allow you to cook hands-free, so you can focus on cooking.
